On Singapore’s Bilingualism: What You Don’t Know About Singapore’s Multilingual Landscape
Speaker：Dr Sai Siew-Min
Singapore’s bilingual education system is well-known in Asia, particularly amongst Asian parents considering options for learning the English language outside the United States or United Kingdom. Yet, the Taiwanese public and Taiwanese parents are often confronted with conflicting myths about Singapore’s multilingual condition. These conflicting myths range from beliefs about an idealized Singaporean English-Chinese bilingualism on one hand and the sub-standard character of English and Mandarin Chinese used by Singaporeans on the other. Drawing on Singapore’s history, this public lecture examines these myths and aims to foster better appreciation of the country’s multilingual past and present.
